A cheek augmentation is a surgical procedure in which implants are inserted to enhance the cheek area for a more voluminous and youthful appearance. Malar and/or submalar implants can be utilized. A malar implant is designed to create greater volume on the cheekbones, causing the cheekbones to look higher. A malar implant helps to create more volume around sunken eyes, restoring the patient to a more rested look. Submalar implants are placed directly below the cheekbones and are typically used to fill out the hollowness of the area. Both implants can be used in the same procedure, depending on the desired look.
Cheek augmentation is a procedure that can correct the hollowing effect that the aging process has on the cheeks. It results in more taught skin, while simultaneously eliminating the nasolabial folds. The surgery calls for an incision to be made below the lower eyelid or inside of the mouth. This is dependent on what the patient and Dr. Kassir feel will be best for their specific needs. Once an incision is made, the implant is inserted and secured into place, and the incision is closed with sutures.
Following surgery, it takes up to 2 weeks to for the majority of swelling and bruising to subside, and up to 3 months for the swelling to completely subside to see the final result. Since it is a minimally invasive procedure, you are able to return to normal daily activities within just a few days. If an oral surgical approach is taken, soft foods must be eaten up to 1 week after surgery to ensure that the sutures are not altered in any way.
If you are not ready to take a surgical approach to combat sunken in cheeks, there is the nonsurgical option of dermal fillers. Dermal fillers can be injected into the cheek area to create more volume. This process can take less than 20 minutes, and results are instant with typically little to no swelling. Restylane dermal fillers in the cheeks can last from six months to one year.
Can I get a cheek augmentation while also getting another procedure done?
Yes, cheek implants are often performed in conjunction with a facelift so that the volume in the cheeks are restored through cheek implants, while also tightening and lifting the skin through a facelift, for optimized youthful results.
Will I be able to feel the implants?
Most patients are able to "feel" the implants after the first few days following the surgery, however, if the implants are secured properly then the patient should not feel them over time. They are designed to look and feel natural.
How long do cheek implants last?
Cheek implants are designed to last for a whole lifetime. Depending on what the patient wants, they are able to be removed or replaced with a different size or type.
